I want to find out but it doesn’t say on the Beeb’s website. I also want to know why it had to be Terry Pratchett. There are plenty of crap authors out there. Like Dan Brown…

I am sure your question wasn’t meant to be hurtful in any way.
Let me give you some facts about Alzheimer’s disease.
In Alzheimer’s Disease changes take place in the structure of the brain leading to cell death. The onset of the disease is gradual and the decline slow and regular.
It is usually associated with old age, though it occasionally occurs in middle age.As far as is known, the disease occurs equally across all groups in society.Unlike many other diseases it does not appear to be linked with social class, ethnic groups or geographical location.
In the early stages of the disease the person seems different from their usual self in ways that may be hard to pinpoint.Their approach to life is dulled, they seem less capable, less involved and less adaptable in all spheres of life. They may show loss of concentration, seem unable to make decisions or avoid taking responsibility.More tangible changes may accompany this dullness.Sufferers may be forgetful, and confused.Behaviour may be slightly odd or inappropriate.
As the disease progresses the symptoms become more obvious and disabling.Sufferers may be very forgetful, especially of recent events and people’s names. They are muddled about time, day, place and unable to find their way around familiar surroundings. They have difficulty in talking and often repeat themselve..They are unable to make sense of what is said to them. They have difficulty carrying out household tasks and neglect personal hygeine. They may behave inappropriately, like going out in their night clothes or wandering around the streets at night. They may hide things or lose things and accuse others of stealing. They become angry, upset or aggressive very easily.
In the final stages they may be very restless, especially at night. They may be unable to carry out household and personal hygeine without help and supervision. They may have bladder and bowel incontinence, confined to a wheelchair or be bedridden. They may not be able to feed themselves.
All in all a very difficult illness to cope with, especially for their family and carers.
My heart goes out to all the people who suffer this terrible disease and to all the families who are affected by it.I sincerely hope that a cure can be found in my lifetime.
no idea but things like this always happen to the nice people not the evil ones
my wishes go out to terry and his family
and i hope he can keep writing
apparently its to do with muscles/hand eye co ordination…
and youre rather nasty, i wouldnt wish this on anyone, even dan brown..
No way …
he is such a talented man
Sometimes life is cruel
They do say however that alzheimers affects intelligent people
Poor man and i agree it is unfair
I think the rarity is that the onset is early and that it progresses faster, although I’m semi-guessing here. I haven’t read his books, now that I hear of him, I’ll have to start. I too just hate the thought of any good author losing mental capacity.
I dislike Dan Brown’s books, but it is a horrid disease for anyone to have. I know you were just kidding when you said that, right?
I hope I’m wrong and it progresses slowly and that they begin to find better medicines or stem cells or something to help. My grandfather had that back when it was just called “going senile” and it was horrible, it robs the person of his memory and robs his loved ones of the person.

I couldn’t find out the type of Alzheimers Terry Pratchett has, and am sorry to read about it in this post.
However for the questionner, in case the articles have not yet been read, and for any other fan of Pratchett’s who may see this, follow the Wiki link. Enter his name in the search box. Then…
Read these numbered items under the word “References.”
One is number five, titled “Terry Pratchett Has Alzheimers” from 12/12/07,
and another is number thirty-four, titled “An Embuggerance,” 12/12/07, which will take you to a short statement by him on a friend’s web site,
and a third, for more info on his symptoms, number thirty-three, titled “I Had a Stroke and Didn’t Know It,” from 11/02/07.
{Keep scrolling down on number thirty-four for the full message.}
I hope these articles will give fans some peace of mind about this, as Pratchett himself will ask for. Read them all… just look for those numbers and titles at Wiki under Reference, after you type his name in the search box.
Luck to him and to us all, with good cheer, which is the best thing we can keep up for him and for any loved ones with this disease–
(my mom had it too, rather early. father-in-law, has it, late.)
Don’t know, maybe his age (59).
That is a very nasty comment. My mam has this. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.
Edit: It is his age. It is called early onset.
It normally effects over 65’s.
Believe me no one would wish this devastating condition on another human being even if you had cause to hate them. My mother has recently been diagnosed with alzheimers and since the diagnosis has become a great deal worse. Its was in her family though as one of her seven brothers had it her father also and three of her four sisters. If a dog was suffering in the same way it would be put to sleep. Myself I think there is a lot to be said for mercy killing. I hope no one has to watch what we are experiencing at the moment.
the one that makes you write too many books.
I found this link for you, but it doesn’t really say much.http://ukpress.google.com/article/ALeqM5…
Very sad indeed.
Like the other answers, I truly wouldn’t wish any illness on anyone.
It is very sad
Just goes to show that it can really happen to anyone
