Is The Bible (the Good Book) Really Good?

I think it is fair to say people generally consider the bible to be a source good. Does this apply to both the new and old testaments? Because I am reading a book by Richard Dawkins and he outlines a story in the book of Numbers where the general gist is that god told Moses to firstly attack a group of people with an army and then do what they please with all the virgin women children. Hmmmmm..

First off, R. Dawkins is not the authority you would want to go to on the Bible, as he displays no belief in God whatever.
There are many such situations in the Bible, but you have to look a little further into the text for the reasoning behind it. Keep in mind that the Jews then were first being introduced to the God concept, and found it hard to accept initially. I could speculate into the reason behind the command, but it would just be my truth, and probably something you could not accept. Therefore, I would sugest further reading and research, then draw your own conclusion.

It is what you make of it. Although the New Testament focuses more on a “loving and forgiving” God, there are messages of hope, redemption, compassion and love throughout the bible. Just like with any document, particularly ones of spiritual or religious nature, the messages they present are open to interpretation so the reader can take away what they will. So, I think the better question than is The Bible a good book, is what am I bringing to The Bible when I read it?

What Richard Dawkins fails to mention is that if all of the exploits of the pagans were recorded and preserved, there would be far worse examples of bad human behavior. He hardly seems to consider what the worshippers of the demons and human sacrifice of the area were doing.
If you read the whole Bible then you get the picture of God’s love for humans and how there is a way for us to reconcile ourselves with Him. Dawkins is an athiest and he often minimizes the violence of communism and other athiestic approaches when they gain power. I read his book and found most of it to be drivel.

Dawkins, like many other ignorant atheists who don’t understand the Bible, is referring to Moses’ law. God’s law is not Moses’ law. God gave his law at Mt. Sinai himself written in stone(10 commandments). That law is not Moses’ law. Moses’ law was delivered to him specifically for the Jews to follow so they get their promised Messiah, which would be abolished upon the death of the Messiah, which it was.

  • j p says:

In order to understand the bible you need to already know a little about God. God commanded Moses and the children of Israel to destroy those people because they were wicked. God did NOT command them to rape those women and children, he gave them the option to take them in and let them become “Children of Israel” just like themselves. The God of the Old Testament is the same as that of the New Testament. God is Just, God is Merciful, and he hasn’t changed.

The Bible is a mixture of subjects. It contains history, the OT law, songs, poetry, and information on how to live.
Some take the Bible literally, others do not. I fall into the latter category. I try to take the good and ignore the rest. I am sure this will make certain people bristle, but it is honest.
The Bible certainly contains many good things. Example? The 10 Commandments of the Old Testament that are expanded on by Jesus in the New Testament.
When the Bible says that jesus did away with the law, it is referring to the physical law. Jesus’ expansion of the 10 Commandments added the necessary spiritual component, which is the motivation part. So, in addition to the 10 Commandments, the true Christian is supposed to keep the spirit of the law.
What does that mean? Example: The 10 C’s say that you cannot kill. But they do not say that you cannot hate. So, you could keep every one of the 10 C’s in the physical sense (by not killing, stealing, etc.) and still harbor hate for your fellow man.
So, Jesus says that it is not enough to keep the 10 Commandments alone. You must also keep the Spirit of the law for them to be kept properly.
It is the hatred, vanity, jealousy, greed, and desire for wrong things that defile humans. It is what eminates from the heart, not what the person wears or says – - the outward appearance.
Another example would be certain traditions people keep in order to appear religious. But, those things (like hair length, certain clothing, etc.) do not make a person righteous. They are nothing in and of themselves. Anyone can do those things and be a totally disgusting person inside.

Christianity is that it started off as a religion based in Jewish tradition but accepting Jesus as a prophet and teacher. Original Sin, Trinity, and Salvation, these are the concepts that are impossible for any human being to fully understand, let alone explain……even After 2000 years.

  • fubeca6 says:

Great Question. First off, you have to understand that the Bible was compiled a long time ago and the “editors” were very liberal in taking out what wasn’t perfectly alligned with what they believed, and adding things to support thier own beliefs.
As far as Numbers goes; that was a very different world back then. God didn’t let the Israelites “do whatever they like” with virgins, etc. From what I understand the Unmarried men COULD take wives from among the virgins of the conqured territories BUT it was REQUIRED that they give the virgins a certain amount of time to grieve for thier families, etc. And those women were to ALWAYS be respected and cherished, and loved. It wasn’t like they were going in there and raping the virgins. If that was done it would certainly have been punished.
Also, in the Pentatauch (1st 5 books of the Bible) we see a lot of cases, where God tells Moses to “whipe [so and so] off the face of the Earth”. That was really for two reasons (that I know of). 1.) the opposing nation was especially wicked and this was thier punishement, 2.) the opposing nation was especially wicked and if the Israelites would have mingled with them they would have become wicked as well.
Anyways, the point is that the first books of the Bible are giving an account of a time that was thousands and thousands of years ago, and since being written the record may have been altered or changed significantly, so it’s really very difficult for us to judge the motives that directed the actions of the people in those days.
But to answer your question: is the Bible really good? I would say yes it is. Good and wholesome principles abound and certainly outway the cases of stories that we have a hard time understanding. Besides, I don’t think God will judge us for not understanding something in the Bible, I think that he will judge us according to what we do with the things that we do understand.
PS> Reading books like the one by Richard Dawkins aren’t really productive because he’s obviously against the Bible (or that part of it). If you wanted to learn about Hinduism would you read a book written against it? No, you’d read a book written BY a Hindu believer. Same principle applies here. I would recommend the Antiquities of the Jews by Flavius Josephus for additional insight into the historical aspect of the Old Testament.
